In today’s rapidly evolving world, leadership is more crucial than ever. Businesses face technological disruptions, economic uncertainties, and shifting workplace dynamics. To navigate these challenges, we can draw inspiration from timeless leadership principles found in the story of Joseph.

There are many aspects of leadership that are downright difficult to navigate especially in times of turbulence. Godly leaders will often be tested repeatedly to build their character on trust, integrity, honesty, resilience, and compassion as well as stand on the principles of God’s laws and promises.

In the story of Joseph, he was favored by his father and was given a special gift, “The coat of many colors.” Joseph shared his dream with his brothers prematurely of the vision being manifested in his life. His brothers became exceedingly jealous of Joseph and plotted to kill him but decided to sell him into slavery for a profit.

Due to this one mistake, Joseph spent years of bondage, injustice and betrayal.

His journey from betrayal to prominence offers valuable lessons that remain relevant for modern leaders.

  1. Envision: Seeing Beyond the Present

Joseph was given dreams that foretold his future, but at first, no one believed him. Despite the skepticism and hardships, he never lost sight of his vision. Effective leaders today must have a clear vision and the persistence, determination and resilience to pursue it, even in the face of adversity. When leading through uncertainty, it’s crucial to communicate a compelling vision that inspires others.

Take Away: Use Wisdom and Discernment

When sharing your passions, goals, dreams, visions, aspirations and desires with others, use wisdom and discernment. The people closest to you- such as your family, friends, co-workers, etc. can be your greatest enemies. Oftentimes, people will secretly compete with you or wish and pray for your downfall. They will gossip, destroy your reputation, participate in character assassination, cause chaos or distractions to sidetrack your focus. Don’t rely on people. Take your plans to the Lord. He will order your steps and guide your path.

Application Process:

  • Define your long-term goals, timelines and deadlines, and stay committed to them.
  • Communicate your vision with your team clarity and enthusiasm.
  • Encourage your staff to align their efforts with a shared purpose.

2. Resilience: Turning Setbacks into Steppingstones

Joseph’s path to leadership was anything but smooth. He was betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, and wrongfully imprisoned. Instead of becoming bitter, he remained resilient and used each challenge as an opportunity to grow. In a world where industries are constantly shifting, leaders must be adaptable and resilient.

The Lord (God) says to my Lord (Messiah),
Sit at My right hand, until I make Your adversaries Your footstool.

Psalm 110:1

Application Process:

  • Reflect on every obstacle the Lord has brought you through to handle setbacks in faith and trust.
  • Focus on solutions rather than dwelling on problems and negativity.
  • Build your relationship with the Lord to securely stand on a solid foundation of truth
  • Learn from your failures and view your challenges as opportunities to grow and develop.

From the Pit to the Palace: Elevation of Prominence

Joseph was chosen to interpret the dreams of the chief cupbearer and baker while imprisoned in Potiphar’s household, which eventually led to Joseph being called upon to interpret Pharaoh’s dream. Out of all of the soothsayers, fortune tellers, astrologers, and divinators, no one could interpret the dream of Potipher besides Joseph. The significance of the interpretation provided great preparation for the upcoming famine in the land. His interpretation of the vison elevated him with favor and prominence to a position of power in Egypt.

3. Character Assassination: Test of Integrity

Potiphar’s wife attraction to Joseph led him to flee temptation yet she lied to her husband. Joseph chose integrity over personal satisfaction and lust. His decision to be faithful unfortunately landed him in prison at Potipher’s house. Joseph remained faithful and gave honor to the Lord despite his uncomfortable circumstances. His unwavering faith and character ultimately positioned him for greater leadership.

Today’s leaders must uphold ethical standards, even when no one is watching.

Application Process:

  • Make decisions based on values, principles and standards, not just pleasures or gain.
  • Encourage a culture of trust and accountability in your organization.
  • Lead by example with self-respect, honesty and ethical behavior.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,
for those who are called according to his purpose.

Rom 8:28

5. Legendary Stewardship: Taking Responsibility over Possessions

When Joseph was elevated to a position of power in Egypt, he didn’t react impulsively. Instead, he developed a strategy to prepare for the coming famine. He stored grain during the years of abundance so that Egypt could survive the years of famine.

“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good,
to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save many people alive.

Gen 50:20

Leaders today must anticipate challenges, think strategically, prepare and plan accordingly.

Application Process:

  • Analyze market trends and industry changes to make informed decisions.
  • Pray for direction and develop contingency plans for potential crises.
  • Speak the Word of God over every decision, situation and circumstance and prioritize sustainability and long-term success over short-term gains.

6. The Journey to Forgiveness: Compassion Over Revenge

Despite his brothers’ betrayal, Joseph chose forgiveness and compassion over revenge. However, he tested his brothers before he revealed himself to them. Joseph requested his brother to bring the youngest brother to him. The brothers made several trips to Potiphar’s house to request grain for survival. Joseph understood the strength of reconciliation and handled his emotions despite the pain — having self-control and being sensitive to others needs is a crucial skill in today’s world, where faith, collaboration, understanding, endurance, and empathy are vital for humanity.

Application Process:

  • Speak less and practice active listening and empathy in your interactions with others.
  • Manage conflicts with wisdom and discretion.
  • Build strong relationships by valuing people over money, power and influence.

Leading Like Joseph in a Modern World

Joseph’s life journey demonstrates that success is not about where you start but how you react and respond to challenges. Vision, resilience, integrity, strategic thinking, and emotional sensitivity to others are important traits that can help modern leaders thrive and survive in an ever-changing landscape. As you navigate today’s complexities, implement Joseph’s example of leadership and lead with vision, purpose, wisdom, courage and resilience honoring the Lord in all that you do.

The Leadership Series: Six Applications to Navigate in Today’s Changing World from the Timeless Wisdom of Mose’s Leadership

Red Sea, Ocean, Waves

In an era of constant change and uncertainty, strong leadership is more critical than ever. Whether you’re leading a business, a movement, or a personal brand, the ability to guide, inspire, and adapt is essential.

One of the greatest leaders in history, Moses, provides timeless wisdom that can be applied to modern leadership challenges. His journey from hesitant shepherd to visionary leader of a nation offers valuable insights for today’s leaders.

public speaking, leadership

1. Embrace Your Calling (Even If You Doubt Yourself)

When Moses was called to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, he was filled with self-doubt. He questioned his abilities, his speaking skills, and his capacity to lead. Exodus 4:10

Many modern leaders experience imposter syndrome, feeling unqualified for their roles. However, Moses’ story teaches us that leadership isn’t about having all the answers but about having the courage to take the first step.

Lesson: Believe in your potential, and don’t let self-doubt keep you from stepping into leadership. Acknowledge the fear and do it anyway.

team collaboration

2. Surround Yourself with the Right People

Moses did not lead alone. His brother Aaron served as his spokesperson, and his father-in-law, Jethro, advised him to delegate responsibilities to others. Exodus 18:17-23

Strong leaders recognize they can’t do everything themselves. Strive to build a team that complements your strengths and weaknesses.

Lesson: Delegate tasks and responsibilities, trust your team, and seek wise counsel to make informed decisions.

Office chaos, unorganized chaos

3. Adapt to Change and Overcome Obstacles

Leading the Israelites through the wilderness was filled with unexpected challenges, from food shortages to internal conflicts. Moses remained adaptable, seeking divine guidance and adjusting strategies when needed. Today’s leaders must also navigate uncertain landscapes, whether dealing with economic shifts, technical advancements, or societal changes.

Lesson: Stay flexible, seek wisdom, and pivot when necessary to overcome challenges. Be content in every circumstance or situation. Look for the lessons in your challenges, obstacles and setbacks.

4. Inspire with Vision and Purpose

Moses continually reminded the Israelites of their ultimate goal—the Promised Land. Even when faced with setbacks, he reinforced the vision, giving people hope and direction.

Modern leaders must do the same by casting a compelling vision that inspires and motivates people through difficult times.

Lesson: Lead with purpose, and help people see the bigger picture beyond immediate struggles. Don’t focus on the negative. Shift your focus on God’s promises and God’s ultimate power in your life.

5. Lead with Integrity and Accountability

Moses had moments of frustration and even mistakes, but he remained accountable for his actions. When he struck the rock instead of speaking to it as instructed by God, he accepted the consequences. Numbers 20:10-12.

Leadership demands transparency, accountability, and ethical decision-making to build trust and credibility.

Lesson: Take responsibility for your actions, lead with integrity, and build trust with those you serve.

6. Develop the Next Generation of Leaders

Moses didn’t just lead—he prepared Joshua to take over. He mentored, encouraged, and entrusted leadership to the next generation. Deuteronomy 31:7-8.

In today’s fast-changing world, leaders must invest in training and equipping future leaders to ensure long-term success.

Lesson: Great leaders create greater leaders. Invest in mentorship and succession planning. Pass on your wisdom, knowledge and experience. Equip leaders with the necessary tools and resources.

The Foundation of Leadership

Moses’ leadership journey is a blueprint for modern leaders facing uncertainty and change.

Whether you’re leading a business, a community, or your own personal brand, these six leadership lessons from Moses offer a foundation for impactful leadership in an ever-changing world.

The Wind of Change

sunset, field

Everything is changing very quickly in this world. Unfortunately, I don’t have a high level of anticipation, like I did when I was younger, for the new year. What I can say is that times and seasons are shifting beneath our feet whether we want it to or not, but we should maintain a high level of expectation in our Lord for He does not change. He is unmovable and unshakeable.

The current fires in Los Angeles have brought extreme devastation to California. This situation will not only affect California but will affect the economy and nationwide home insurance policies. Whether the fires were caused by a natural disaster or started by arsonists, the God of the father of Abraham, Issac and Jacob is calling His attention to the sins of this nation. How will we choose to respond or react to this catastrophe? Will we throw our fists in the air and grow angry, callus or rebellious toward God? Or will we fall on our knees in reverence and honor to the King of Kings and intercede and repent on behalf of this country?

Hollywood is well known for its idolatry. The exposure and fallen out of explicit sexual exploitation, sex trafficking, pornography, parade of homosexuality, sexual addiction and sexual abuse in the entertainment industry is a prime example of a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah. The spotlight is shining on Hollywood as they face tremendous loss and an overwhelming recovery effort in this heartbreaking tragedy.

I noticed while looking at the map of California that the fires were in a circle which I was referring to as the “Ring of fire.” These fires are a warning. The alarm has sounded. Will the fires be a pre-cursor to a devastating earthquake? Let us pray against an earthquake hitting the state of California or additional tectonic plates around the world.

In the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot was warned to leave the city before destruction and to not look back upon the city for else he and his wife would turn into a pillar of salt. In Genesis 19, Lot was warned that the land would be destroyed due to the sins of the people.

13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it.
14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.
23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.
24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;

Gen 19:13-14, and 23-24
13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it. 14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law. Gen 19:13-14

23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.

24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; Gen 19:23-24

28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt. Gen 19: 28-29

History has a way of repeating itself especially when the lessons are not learned from the past. The vanity, greed and arrogance of man is embedded deeply in our culture. Celebrities are worshipped like gods. The music industry displays the demonic agenda boldly and proudly flaunts their wickedness on stage and within their lyrics as fans flock to their concerts to support them at any cost. Athletes are icons where fans rather attend sporting events than go to church. The movie industry plant seeds of witchcraft and evil to celebrate chaos, destruction and devastation as well as murder, crime, and torture. A woman’s anatomy has become a playground for lust and perversion. Children are no longer safe among adults. In reality, you have to keep a close eye on everything and everyone around you. Unfortunately, many innocent people suffer at the hands of evil men. We are in a spiritual war and it’s a real fight.

“For he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” Matt 5:45

Most don’t do anything until it affects them personally, but will we continue to be complacent with a blind eye or draw closer to the Lord? May the light of God shine amid darkness and awaken the blind.

The Lord says to the people, “Awake and come out of deep sleep and perverse darkness!”

And the sword shall come upon Egypt, and great pain shall be in Ethiopia, when the slain shall fall in Egypt, and they shall take away her multitude, and her foundations shall be broken down. Ezk 30:4

And they shall be desolate in the midst of the countries that are desolate, and her cities shall be in the midst of the cities that are wasted.

And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have set a fire in Egypt, and when all her helpers shall be destroyed.

In that day shall messengers go forth from me in ships to make the careless Ethiopians afraid, and great pain shall come upon them, as in the day of Egypt: for, lo, it cometh. Ezk 30:7-9

13 Thus saith the Lord God; I will also destroy the idols, and I will cause their images to cease out of Noph; and there shall be no more a prince of the land of Egypt: and I will put a fear in the land of Egypt. Ezk 30:13

15 And I will pour my fury upon Sin, the strength of Egypt; and I will cut off the multitude of No. Ezk 30:15

18 At Tehaphnehes also the day shall be darkened, when I shall break there the yokes of Egypt: and the pomp of her strength shall cease in her: as for her, a cloud shall cover her, and her daughters shall go into captivity.

19 Thus will I execute judgments in Egypt: and they shall know that I am the Lord. Ezk 30:18-19

Prayer for the Nation

Lord Father, we cast down our idols in honor to worship the one and only true God, “The Father God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob.” Forgive us for our selfish nature and disobedience. We repent and we turn away from sin. Wash our hands clean of all unrighteousness, cleanse our heart and renew our minds. Establish our steps to walk Holy as representatives of Christ. We pray for strength, courage and wisdom as we navigate through the terrains of life. May you uphold us with your righteous right hand and do not let us slip. We rest under the shelter of your wings.

May you provide strength, comfort and safety to all those affected by the current tragedies upon this new year and grant peace for those who have lost loved ones in the fatal attacks or L.A. fires. May you increase the strength and safety of the first responders and fire fighters and all those assisting in the care and outreach of those who have lost their homes. May you bring restoration and salvation to the loss. May the outpouring of the Holy Spirit be evident in the lives of your people and may the wind of the Holy Spirit be upon us.

In the precious Blood of Jesus. Amen.
